River Sessions

River sessions are run every Wednesday (although this does change depending on tide times) at the University's Watersports Centre (The boathard).

The boathard is located near the Wessex Lane Halls of Residence.

To get to the boathard, walk down Woodmill Lane and follow it around to the right past Stoneham tower. Just before the bridge over the river turn right down Oliver Road. At the end of this road there's a gate down to the left. That's the entrance to the boathard. The postcode is SO18 2JL.

If directions aren't your thing, this helpful video shows the route in it's entirety.

Both the U1 and U6 can be taken to within walking distance of the boathard

We spend a couple of hours on the River Itchen working on skills, or just paddling about. Depending on the tide we have a weir to play on, or a huge stretch of river to travel up. Read the weir water levels guide here to get to know this play spot more.

All kit is provided to members so you need bring only yourselves, a towel, some shoes you don't mind getting wet, swim wear and maybe a thermal to go under the wetsuit on cold days.

Information
We would like to remind everyone going in/on the water to cover any open cuts with a waterproof dressing/plaster, try not to drink river water, try to wash your hands with soap before eating, and make sure you wash after paddling. If you do start feeling ill and decide to visit the doctor please mention you have been in the river and mention Weil’s to the GP.

“An expert in leptospirosis has estimated that the risk of contracting a leptospirosis infection by taking part in these types of activities is as low as 1 in 10 million”
