Southampton University Canoe Club: Mailing List Introduction

This email contains important information about using the mailing
list. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY AND KEEP THIS COPY FOR FUTURE
REFERENCE. Do not expect polite replies from the list members or
owner if you ask questions which are answered in this introduction!

1) About the list
-----------------
The mailing list is available to members for the distribution of
information relating to the activities of the Canoe Club.
The list is a closed one; only email addresses subscribed to the list
can post to it. However, it is not moderated; those who can post to
the list can post what they like!


2) Mailing the entire list
--------------------------
To send information to the list use the email address:
    susu-canoe@lists.soton.ac.uk

Mail sent to the list will automatically have SUCC: prepended to the
subject line so you can distinguish it in your mailbox.

DO NOT SEND ADMIN (subscribe/unsubscribe etc.) REQUESTS TO THE
MAILING LIST!

Also, please DO NOT POST BINARY ATTACHMENTS to the list -
this includes application executables and image files attached to
emails. Many people on the list have only limited email quota which
can easily be filled with such mail, preventing them from receiving
any further mail. If you wish to distribute images and suchlike,
please put the file on the web on your homepage, and then post the
URL to the mailing list.

The mailing list server will attempt to filter and block out any
mails with large attachments posted - you will not get any warning
of this, but the mail will disappear into a big 'black hole'!

Instead, upload pictures etc to your university web space, or use photobucket/photobox etc.


3) Mailing the club committee only
----------------------------------
To only mail the Canoe Club committee use the email address:
    canoe@soton.ac.uk


4) Unsubscribing from the list
-------------------------------

To unsubscribe yourself from the list, send an email to:
    majordomo@lists.soton.ac.uk

with the following in the body of the message:
    unsubscribe susu-canoe

If this fails to work, then you're trying to unsubscribe using a
different account to that with which you joined.
Try the following in the body of the message:
    unsubscribe susu-canoe <your email address>

where <your email address> is the email address of the account that is
subscribed to the list (e.g. name@soton.ac.uk). If your email is
forwarded, be sure to specify the address subscribed to the list, not
the address it is then forwarded to.


5) Subscribing to the list
--------------------------

If you are reading this, you should already be subscribed! However
for the sake of completeness, to subscribe to the list, email:
    majordomo@lists.soton.ac.uk

with the following in the body of the message:
    subscribe susu-canoe

If you are a member of the club, the moderator will then approve your
admission to the mailing list.

If you need to subscribe an address which is not that of the account
you are mailing from, use the subscribe commmand in the form:
    subscribe susu-canoe <the address you wish to subscribe>


6) Changing the address subscribed to the list
----------------------------------------------

If your email address has changed, and you wish to update the address
subscribed to the list, first unsubscribe your old address (see
section 4), then resubscribe using your new address (see section 5).


7) Retrieving archives of messages
----------------------------------

Email sent to the list is archived by the mailing list server.
To receive a list of mailing list archives, send an email to:
    majordomo@lists.soton.ac.uk

with the following in the body of the message:
    index susu-canoe

This returns a list of the archive files available, named according to
the date they ware created. For example, the index showing the file
from 14th March 1997:

You can then retrieve the required archive file by sending an email
to:
    majordomo@lists.soton.ac.uk

containing the following in the body of the message:
    get susu-canoe <filename>

where <filename> is e.g. susu-canoe.970314
